Located in Hickory, NC. Lightning Cycles offers Specialized, Ibis, Santa Cruz and Marin bikes as well as offering a broad range of gear for all your mountain and road biking needs.
Lightning Cycles Inc. was founded in 1996 by Mike and Cindy Owensby to serve the community and get people out riding bicycles. In 2013 a collaborative effort from Lightning Cycles, Specialized Bicycles, City of Newton, and the Catawba Valley Heritage Alliance constructed the 2.25 mile Woodland Loop Trail at Jacob Fork Park in Newton NC. This park provides a great opportunity for many people to experience the joys that riding a bicycle can bring.
Lightning Cycles believes in giving back to the community with continued trail work at Riverbend Park as well as Hickory City trails. There are many other projects in the works that we are planning to be a part of. More trails for both on and off road cyclists.
In March 2016 Lightning Cycles was purchased and taken over by Michael Maloney and Cody Laxton.
Mike has been working on bikes since 1994. He came to work for Lightning Cycles in 1999 as a full time mechanic and assistant shop manager. Mike has raced BMX, XC and Downhill Mountain Bikes for the Lightning Cycles team.
Cody who is new to cycling brings passion for his new love of bikes and has a fresh outlook to add to an already proven shop.
They both enjoy road and mountain bike riding. Mike also partakes on the occasional handcycle ride. He has ridden with the Adaptive Sports and Adventure Program (A.S.A.P) out of Charlotte, as a volunteer and mechanic on 3 of the Cycle to the Sea rides. This is a fund raiser ride for challenged athletes which allows many injured people to enjoy an active lifestyle that we all benefit from.
